Why Do We Suffer From Indigestion?

Indigestion is something that effects all of us, especially as we get older. When we are young we seem to be able to stomach eating amount of any mixture of foods without getting painful reflux or indigestion.

This changes from our early thirties when our digestive tracts don’t seem to be able to process that well.

Perhaps it is all those burgers, late night snacks eaten quickly as teenagers and young adults! Whatever the case it is always helpful to know some home remedies as well as having some chemist indigestion aids in your fridge as well.

Indigestion

While we can opt for the chemist solutions such as Mylanta, what about natural remedies, which are always worth trying?

There are many different natural remedies for indigestion but let us focus on just ten to keep it nice and simple:-

#1.  Peppermint

One of the best ways to treat indigestion to eat or drink some form of peppermint. You can have peppermint mints. Alternatively for a more natural source why not have a soothing up of natural peppermint tea. Many people have this after meals daily to aid their digestion, regardless of whether they have indigestion.

#2. Fennel

Drink a cup of Fennel or alternatively Anise tea. This will remove any indigestion.

#3. Ginger

This herb is known for its nausea-settling and other health benefits. However another major usage is indigestion. Tablets can be taken or alternatively ginger tea which tends to calm as well as ease the indigestion. Sometimes it is eating a meal in a tense manner or too quickly that causes the indigestion in the first place.

Alternatively you might want to keep some ginger beer in your fridge since this also works for indigestion as it does for nausea and morning sickness.

#4. Bitter Beer

Yes that is right! Drink half a glass of bitter beer. The herbs and hops that are in beer aid digestion. However don’t have too much or you may end up nursing a hangover. Bitter beer can do that if you are not used to it!

#5. Preventive Mixture

Sometimes you know before you are going to eat, say at a restaurant with spicy Mexican food. Chances are you may well get indigestion.

However if you mix 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water 30 minutes before eating it will help digestion.

Another similar alternative is in China and Asia where they sip hot water and hot teas to aid digestion of all meals. That is why you will always find Asian restaurants including traditional Chinese ones will bring out the hot tea first.

#6. Soda Water

The bubbles in the soda water will often reduce indigestion so keep a bottle in the fridge.

#7. Licorice Root

Licorice in general even licorice sticks can alleviate indigestion. However once again the best form is the natural source. This will be either the licorice root sticks or slabs or alternatively licorice tea.

#8. Chamomile Tea

Drink this and not only will you remove your indigestion but it will relax you and if taken at bed time may act as a natural sleep inducer.

#9. Milk

This may or may not work. Many families have passed this one down and it definitely works for some people. The principle is a bit the same as taking milky liquid Milk of Magnesia or Mylanta from the Chemist. Many health specialists argue that it is slightly acidic.

But then I guess it depends on how much milk you have and also how close to bedtime since it acts as a kind of food. It is never a good idea to eat within 2-3 hours of going to bed if possible. This is to enable optimal digestion of food and preparation for a good sleep.

#10. Slippery Elm

If the indigestion is occurring regularly, this in tablet form is a great solution. Over time the wall of the intestine will be re-optimised, thereby reducing indigestion.

 

So as you can see the ten natural methods for treating or preventing indigestion are easy to ingest and can save you a lot of discomfort. That way if indigestion you can again look forward to that next delicious home baked or restaurant meal, knowing as you relish each piece of food you will not pay any price afterwards!
