26 Home Remedies for Hearing Loss

While what the problem is is rather self-explanatory, there are three major kinds of hearing loss.  The first type of hearing loss is conductive hearing loss. It can happen when the ear canal, bones, drum, or middle ear has been damaged  There are a number of injuries or issues that can cause conductive hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss can be imposed by fluid build-up in the inner ear from an illness, punctured eardrum, earwax build-up, ear infections (including ear infections to the ear canal), and odd objects in the ear.

The second major type of hearing loss is sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and it is caused by nerve-related issue in the inner ear. The nerves in your ears can be harmed by head trauma, aging, loud noises (this is nonreversible), genetics, and tumors.

Mixed hearing loss, is the third type of hearing loss, and it is a combination of conductive and SNHL hearing loss.

Home Remedies for Hearing Loss

Some damage to the ear cannot be reversed with medical attention and sometimes SNHL and Conductive Hearing Loss need surgery so they do not cause permanent problems. If your hearing does not improve after a few days of using these natural remedies, please make an appointment with your doctor.

  1. No Cold Foods

Cold and/or raw foods can block the eustachian tubes in your ears which can slow or completely stop drainage from your inner ear. Eat less of these foods is you are currently struggling with hearing loss.

  1. No Processed Meat or Dairy

Processed meats and dairy can produce more mucus and proteins that have been found built up in the inner ear. Avoid these foods as much as you can if you currently have hearing loss problems. If you do not, then you can eat less of these foods to prevent hearing loss.

 

  1. Hawthorn Berry

The juice found in hawthorn berries increase blood flow and can help to slow the progression of hearing loss. Eat a serving of these berries a day to prevent and treat hearing loss.

 

  1. No Loud Sounds

This is more of a preventional objective than a reversible one. When you’re listening to music with earbuds or earphones and it advises you to turn the music down, follow the suggestion. Most of the time, hearing loss caused by loud noises or prolonged loud noises is only fixable with surgery or hearing aids.     

 

  1. Garlic

  1. Vitamins D and B12

These two vitamins do wonders for a couple of different things in your body. These two vitamins come in capsules or you get can them foods like eggs, salmon, tofu, and milk. Take the supplement pills as directed or add these foods into your diet to benefit from this home remedy.

 

  1. Echinacea

This flowering herb is fantastic for building your immune system. The stronger your immune system is, the lesser chance you have of getting ill. Getting ill less limits your chances of getting ear infections or the chances of fluid building up in your ear. The herb comes in teas and in capsules so consumption is fairly easy.

 

  1. Exercise

Exercise can be helpful in countless ways because of how it helps to get your blood pumping. Blood flow helps to clean out the body through your liver. So try some exercises that you can do at home or even go to the gym and see if it helps your immune system or hearing.

 

  1. Table Salt

Kosher salt is considered Kosher because the grains are larger so draws more blood from the meat to make the meat Kosher. Making a poultice with Kosher salt and placing it on your ear for about ten minutes can help to draw built fluid from your inner ear.

To make the poultice, you microwave some Kosher salt for about four minutes and spread it over a cloth before tying the four corners together and placing it on the ear you’re having the hearing trouble with and let it sit from ten minutes.

 

  1. Sleep on Your Back

Putting pressure on the ear that you can’t hear well from can increase the hearing loss. The best way to sleep when you’re having ear troubles in on your back or reclined a chair. If you have fluid buildup in your ear, then the pressure of sleeping on that can swish around and cause pain or it can put pressure on the inside of your head behind the ear because of the fluid pressing on other things.

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hearing loss can be caused by wax build up. Lay down on your side and have someone put a couple drops of hydrogen peroxide into the ear that’s been giving you problems. Lay like this for a few minutes (seven to ten) before tilting your head over a sink and letting it flow from your ear to the drain and then rinse your ear out with gently warmed distilled water.

  1. Food Allergies

If you have recently had an ear infection, you might want to pay special attention to any food that you are allergic to. Certain food allergies (gluten, nuts, and lactose intolerance) can kick the ear infection back full swing and that can contribute to your troubled hearing.

 

  1.  Rest

If you are experiencing hearing loss after suffering from a cold or illness, the illness may still be kicking around your system a bit. Rest up some more, get cozy, and binge some of your favorite movies for a day or two.

 

  1. Warm Washcloth

If one of your ears is feeling pain, try heating a cloth and placing it over the affected for a little while and see if it reduced the pain. Use this home remedy as often as needed to relieve pain associated with ear infections, which may impact hearing.

 

  1. Omega-3

Omega-3 is good for easing inflammation that can come with an ear infection. You can take Omega-3 supplements or find it in fatty fish, or chia and flax seeds. Take these supplements as directed or add these foods into your diet to benefit from this home remedy.

  1. Don’t Eat Sugar

While getting over a cold or illness, try not to eat too much sugar. While this white substance may taste sweet, what it can do to your body isn’t. Sugar can put increase inflammation by putting holes in your immunity system.   

 

  1. Quit Smoking

One of the worst possible things you can do for your body is smoke. The chemicals in cigarettes can absolutely abolish your immunity system and leave you open for a whole new spectrum of infections and illnesses.

  1. Wash Your Hands

Wash your hands often to fight off germs and bacteria before they even get going to help stave off infections and cold that could open the floodgates for colds, infections, and other illnesses that could cause hearing loss.

 

  1. Don’t Stress

Stress is terrible on your body and can rip enough holes in your immune system to get you sick. Don’t feel ashamed if you need to take a day to yourself during the week to catch up on proper sleep, food, and taking care of yourself in general.

Sunflower seeds have a lot of vitamins and antioxidants (like Vitamin E). A ¼ cup of sunflower seeds has 82% of the day’s Vitamin E.  Avocados and leafy greens that are dark in color also have Vitamin E. Add more of these foods to your diet to take advantage of this home remedy.

 

  1. Shellfish

Shellfish have lots of zinc in them that can also help to stave off infection. The next time you think you might be coming down with something, try some crab, shrimp, clams, or lobster.

 

  1.  Baby Oil

Baby oil can soften ear wax and help you to remove it from your ear. Sometimes, hearing loss is as simple as wax build up. To use baby oil for this, you do it in the same manner that you use the hydrogen peroxide. Lay on your side, put a few drops in the affected ear, let it sit and do its work for several minutes, tilt your head over a drain to get it out, and rinse your ear out with warm water.  

 

  1. Olive Oil

You can also use olive oil in the same way you would use baby oil,  but you’ll want to warm the oil just a little bit and leave it in ten minutes instead of seven before your rinse the oil out of your ear. If you use olive oil, you get a little extra bonus of the olive’s antiseptic components.
