Usually, people who have a dry skin type suffer from the problem of dry hair as well. Dry hair is a term given to hair that lacks natural sheen and is of a very rough texture.

The hair is similar to the skin and is made out of three layers which work in unison. This means that there are outer and inner layers of your hair. The outer hair layer protects the inner hair layers. A damaged top hair layer is the root of the dry hair problem. The sebaceous gland is responsible for releasing oil into the hair. A person suffering from dry hair usually has had their natural oils depleted through various activities.

Chlorine water splashing, sun tanning, prolonged exposure to heat from dryers and styling tools are all unhealthy actions. These actions strip your hair of its natural oils and cause dry hair. Both men and women can experience symptoms of dry hair.

General Causes

Dry hair can be identified by the fact that it is impossible to comb through it. Dry hair shows a loss of smoothness and is very coarse.

Home Remedies for Dry Hair


  1. Drink More Water

Like for most illness, drinking water is a must and certainly helps. Water in the body helps get rid of harm-causing toxins which lead to hardness of hair. Water in the body ensures that you are hydrated and since dehydration is a cause of dry hair, it is vital to stay fully hydrated at all times. Try to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to be properly hydrated.


  1. Sugar Water

Sugar water has been mentioned to be a treatment for brittle hair.  To make the sugar water solution, simply dissolve a spoon of sugar in a glass of water. Once the soluble is diluted completely, pour the solution into your hands. Rub hands all over the hair from root to tip. It is best to do this right before a shower, so you can easily wash any excess sugar out of your hair.


  1. Avoid Chlorine Water

Seawater has no hair damaging properties however, pool water is known to damage hair. Chlorine found in pools has been noted as a cause for dry and limp hair. Thus, if one swims in a chlorine filled pool, a swimming cap needs to be used.

  • 1 gallon of steaming water

Start by boiling water in a jug and then used the hot water and pour it on the teaspoons of the dry herb. Allow soaking for a good few hours or during the night. After the waiting period, strain the herbs.

Use the hair rinse whilst bathing after a good shampoo. Be certain that the hair and scalp get soaked with the rinse. Massaging and rubbing the scalp ensures the rinse is penetrated by the hair. More of the rinse can be gently poured on the head. The rinse can be repeated as much as four times. Finally, rinse hair clean. Repeat procedure during every bath until dry hair is restored to healthy locks.

  1. Sage Hair Rinse

Like the comfrey hair rinse, the sage herb can also be used to make the rinse. The benefit of the sage herb is that along with remedying dehydrated hair strands, it also helps with grey hairs. It will remedy itchy scalps as well as thin hair too. This is because the sage herb is enriched with zinc, vitamins B,  vitamin C, and other valuable ingredients. Such ingredients work well due to their antioxidant ability.

  • 2 cups of hot water

Just like with the comfrey herbs, the cups of boiled water must be poured on the herb. Again, allow the water to soak up the herb. After the resting time, the leaves must be drained from the water. The rinse must be used after shampoos. Again, it is vital that the scalp gets soaked with the rinse. Rub carefully to ensure the rinse penetrates into the hair.

With this herb, it is not necessary to rinse off the herbal water with fresh water.


  1. Lavender Essential Oil

It is common knowledge that oils are beneficial to hair. Lavender oil comes from the petals of the lavender plant.  Lavender oil also has the emollients necessary to add the needed moisture in hair strands. This oil works on hair pores and battles itchy scalp.

Another worthy fact of lavender oil is that it regularizes oil content thus working on both over or under stimulated oil glands. Lavender essential oil is essential for hydrating hair and preventing hair bacteria and fungus whilst stopping hair fall out and remedying the scalp from dandruff.

Alternatively, olive oil can be heated with droplets of lavender essential oil to make a hot oil treatment. To do this, heat 1/4 cup olive oil to make it warm. Add two drops of lavender oil to this mix. Give a hot oil massage to your hair and scalp. You may do this weekly.


  1. Hot Olive Oil Massage

Rubbing hot oil into the scalp promotes blood circulation. Through circulation, the sebaceous gland is promoted to release sebum which coats the hair protectively. Oil generally is a hair cure but heated oil has the power of reaching deep into hair roots. Hot oil nourishes and feeds hair with necessary nutrients and rectifies extremely damaged hair follicles and strands.

To use this home remedy, assess the amount of oil needed bases on hair length. Add the amount of oil required to a dish. The oil needs to be heated but precaution must be taken so the oil is not overheated. The oil should not be so heated so it can be placed on the palm. Rub the oil onto the scalp. The oil should be rubbed into the hair rather gently so as to not cause any further harm to the hair. Gentle stimulation of the hair follicles will also improve blood circulation.

After rubbing, the oil should be left to remain in the hair for a few hours or during the night. When you gently massage your hair and scalp with warm oil, you are providing nourishment and proper blood circulation to this area of your body. After oil is soaked properly in the hair, it must be washed out using a gentle shampoo followed by a conditioner. It is best to do the treatment at least twice weekly to get maximum results.


  1. Sesame Oil

Oils have proven to be the hair doctor and sesame oil is no exception. It is also a source of vitamins and minerals for hair. To effectively use sesame oil in hair add a tablespoon of root juice with lemon juice and sesame oil. This mixture of ingredients can be added to the hair. A cotton towel can be wrapped around the hair. The oil should be rinsed off with shampoos and conditioners.


  1. Almond Oil

Another cure for hair is almond oil. To apply almond oil to the hair, spoons of warm oil must be mixed with a few drops of vanilla essence to give the oil a pleasant aroma. The mixture can be generously applied to the hair using palms and fingers. The oil must stay in the hair for about half an hour before it is rinsed off with water.

  1. Castor Oil

If almond oil or sesame oil is not the option for you, opt for castor oil. This oil helps with problems of dandruff, split ends and broken hair.  Rub the oil into the hair and allow the oil to settle in the hair for about half an hour. The hair needs to be thoroughly washed with a mild shampoo and conditioner.


  1. Sandalwood and Jojoba Oil

Gelatin is good for your hair. The proteins found in gelatin works towards restoring hair moisture and simultaneously serve as an excellent hair treatment. To make a gelatin hair solution it is best to mix a spoon of gelatin into warm water until gelatin has mixed in completely. To the liquid, vinegar droplets, as well as lavender or rosemary or lemon oil drops, can be added.

This mixture can be smeared onto the hair and works within a few minutes. The gelatin hair pack must be washed off the hair.


  1. Baking Soda

A more beneficial egg hair mask involves using two eggs and whisking until the eggs are liquid. To the whisked eggs, a spoon of lemon juice, olive or almond oil which will help the mix smell better. The egg remedy can be rubbed in the hair and scalp. This egg mask should be applied to the hair weekly.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner

Apple cider vinegar works to get rid of extra products and as a conditioner helps boosts healthy hair. The vinegar works to balance the scalp’s PH levels thus curing itchiness and dullness

To make the ACV conditioner, all you need is to mix half the cup of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water.  Spread this mix generously over the hair. The conditioner needs to be soaked into the hair. The mix should be left on for a few minutes before washing.


  1. Vinegar for Dry Hair

Like apple cider vinegar, white vinegar has been a timely solution for dry hair. The vinegar works on the outer layer of the hair and on the hair cuticle itself. Vinegar assists in restoring the cuticle that becomes exposed during shampooing. Like apple cider vinegar, white vinegar also gets rid of product build up in the hair. The rinse need only be used once a week for no more than a month, or else your hair may even drier than when you started.

The vinegar needs to be dropped into a few cups of water. The rinse should be put on the hair once the shampoo and conditioning regime has been completed. Focus on applying the rinse to the scalp and ends of the hair. Allow this rinse to soak in the scalp and rinse the rinse off. Towel dry hair thereafter.


  1. Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds work its magic too as a natural remedy. It contains elements such as proteins, nicotinic acid, and vitamin C. The lecithin contained by the seeds works to hydrate and nourish hair and the seeds also battles dandruff

For the mixture use a few fenugreek seeds. The amount of seeds used depends on the hair length. The seeds must be placed in water and left for the night. These seeds must be ground into a paste. The paste is made richer with two tablespoons of yogurt. This paste must be put on the hair and left for about 30 minutes. Thereafter, the hair must be rinsed clean using a gentle shampoo. This treatment should be done often to yield the best results.


  1. Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise with all its fats is a home remedy. This miracle whip gives the hair the needed luster. A cup or half a cup should be massaged gently into the hair. The mayonnaise should stay in the hair for close to half an hour. The hair should be then washed thoroughly after use of this home remedy.


  1. Ghee

With the unrefined fats found in ghee, your hair is sure to be left with silky luster after use. Ghee is also good to reduce the appearance of split ends and fall out hair. Ghee must be massaged into the scalp. It must be given time to work in the hair and thereafter, must be washed out properly.


  1. Crushed Aspirin

Aspirin need not only be used for medicinal purposes but can be used to treat hair too. The broken and crushed aspirin tablets can be put into the normal shampoo. Salicylic acid found in aspirin is helpful in ensuring hair maintains a healthy glow.


  1. Curry Leaves

Curry leaves are a source of calcium and vitamins and are thus a good hair potion. To use the leaves in hair one can start by warming a few tablespoons of coconut oil on the stove. The curry leaves can be placed in the oil. After heated, the oil must be allowed to cool off. This curry leaf oil can be put on the scalp and along the lengths of the hair.

Optional Method

Heat two tablespoons of coconut oil, adding five or six curry leaves in it. Heat it for a few minutes and allow it to cool down. Apply it on the scalp and hair A towel can be put on the head to allow the mixture to settle into the hair.

  1. Beer

Beer is a valuable hair potion that adds volume, sheen, and longevity to hair. With beer, hair is guaranteed to be stronger. The vitamin B contained in beer is effective in restoring hair.

Beer can be poured into a spray can and sprayed onto damp hair. The beer will evaporate on the hair when a hair dryer is used allowing the hair to stay shiny.


  1. Bottle Gourd

Another alternative to beer is to use the juice from bottle gourd on the hair. Pour some on your palms and rub over your hair. Wait for about an hour. This must not be left on the hair. This needs to be washed out when the time is up, or else your hair will not benefit from this home remedy.


  1. Chamomile

Chamomile tea is the solution for dehydrated hair. To remedy hair frizz, one should prepare chamomile tea. To make the tea, a tea bag must be dissolved in the water. Once dissolved, a few droplets of olive oil can be added. This tea mixture can be sprinkled on hair. This is a hair potion for dehydrated hair as well as for fixing split ends.


  1. Black Tea

If chamomile tea is not the solution for you, the well-reviewed black tea will work too. For black tea, a black tea bag needs to be dissolved in a cup of warm water. This tea can be spread over the hair and left on for but a few minutes. The tea must be washed off.


  1. Pumpkin

A pumpkin hair mask can be made by boiling a piece of pumpkin. The pumpkin must be mashed after being boiled.  A generous splash of plain yogurt needs to be added to complete the mask. Apply this directly to the hair. This pumpkin puree must be effectively added to the hair and left on for a few minutes. The hair must be washed after applying the puree.


  1. Papaya Pack

Papaya helps your hair grow better and with evident sheen. A papaya hair solution can be made by using sliced papaya and bananas. This should be mashed in a bowl of yogurt.  Honey or coconut oil can be included to make a hair pack. It must be applied to hair and left on to allow the papayas to work properly. Hair must be rinsed clean afterward.

Potassium in bananas is essential and helps hair stay hydrated. Bananas must be mashed and applied to the hair. Thereafter hair must be washed. To the banana mash, yogurt can be added as well to make a more rich mixture.


  1. Avocado

Avocado, like banana, is a beneficial source of nutrients for the hair. The vitamin H in avocados strengthens hair. Smash an avocado. Mix this with one egg, a tablespoon of olive oil, and a tablespoon of plain yogurt. The mixture must be placed on the hair and rinsed off after leaving the mask to hydrate the hair

For an easier option, one can just combine mashed avocados and a whole egg and place that on the hair.


  1. Strawberry Mix

 Strawberries add the needed gloss and sheen to your hair. To make the strawberry hair potion, berries must be chopped and mashed. The number of berries needed will directly depend on the length of your hair.  Mayonnaise must be added to these berries.

It works best on damp hair and once applied the hair must be covered. The delightful mixture can be left for a few minutes before the normal shampoo regime is continued.


  1. Yogurt

Generally by merely eating fat-free plain yogurt one reaps one too many health benefits. Yogurt acts as a conditioner too. The lactic acid found in yogurt helps clean the scalp giving the hair the salon treatment at an affordable cost.

Use a few spoons of yogurt (based on hair individual length) and rub on the scalp. This must be left on the scalp for a good few minutes before being rinsed off.

Alternatively, a better task makes use of a beaten egg and tablespoons of yogurt. This can also be put into the hair. Yogurt is harmless and can be used weekly and often.


  1. Cocoa Powder

A worthwhile hair remedy is cocoa powder mixed with yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and honey. The cocoa solution can be applied to hair and left on for a while before it is washed off. Cocoa has beneficial properties for the hair.


  1. Hair Treatment Caution

Finally, remember to give your hair rest in between styling. It is extremely harmful to apply colors to your hair after a perming session. Give your hair breaks between dying and straightening to give your hair time to recover / Do not fully dry the hair by continuously exposing your hair to harmful treatments. Simple things, like not pulling hair too tight in a ponytail, are also important.
